Olive & Oak Studio

A calm work room for four: one shared oak bench desk set across the window light, so no screen faces the glare. The lavender wall becomes olive limewash behind an oak slat panel that also soaks up call echo, and the beams vanish into a cove-lit ceiling band.

Clearances: about 75 cm behind the chairs on the shelving side and 80 cm on the credenza side, enough to push back and walk past. The desk runs toward the window so everyone gets side light. Fewer people? Drop to a 180 cm desk for two and move the reading chair to the slat wall.

Order of work

  1. Week 1Remove the tube light, rod and old boards. Chase wiring for the floor box, run the AC pipe and point, frame the ceiling band. Order the desk, shelving and slat panel; factory pieces take 10–15 days.
  2. Week 2Board and joint the ceiling, form the cove. Putty and prime all walls.
  3. Week 3Paint, then limewash the feature wall. Polish the marble. Fit the shelving, cabinet and slat panel.
  4. Week 4Lights, switches, AC and fan. Laminate the door, fit the blind, bring in the desk and chairs and style the room.

Room sizes are estimates from your photos and video, with the ceiling at 10 ft (3.05 m) as given. Measure on site before ordering anything made to size.

The marble floor in the model is the flat's real floor, taken from the bedroom scan. Wood, linen, bouclé, hessian and plaster textures are CC0 scans from Poly Haven.

The photos are path-traced in Blender Cycles. The reading chair, side table, plants, vases, basket, books, clock and lamps are CC0 models from Poly Haven.

In the 3D model the light is baked from the same path tracer as the photos: sun patches, soft shadows, bounce light by day and lamp pools by evening.
