Sage & Teak Bedroom

A calm, warm room built around what already works: the long solid wall becomes the bed wall, the polished marble stays, and the beams disappear into a cove-lit ceiling. Rust and brass details keep a trace of the old terracotta wall.

Clearances: 60 cm in front of the wardrobe, 65 cm in front of the dressing table and 97 cm at the foot of the bed. The dressing table's brown is a shade darker than the teak, which reads fine next to it; brass knobs tie it to the pendants. The ledges stay slim because both doors swing into the corners on the bed wall. Want a TV? Put a 43″ on the window wall in place of the print, centred at 1.0 m.

Lighting in four layers

General · downlightsSix 7 W COB downlights in the ceiling band; the two by the bed wall graze the flutes.

Task · pendants and dressing tableOpal-glass pendants with brass caps hang to 1.2 m over each ledge; the band downlight by the balcony wall lights the dressing table mirror from the front.

Accent · strips2700 K strip along the top of the fluted panel; a motion-sensor strip inside the wardrobe.

Switch the cove and downlights two-way, from the entrance and from either side of the bed. Each pendant switches at its own bedside.

Order of work

Week 1Remove the tube light, rod and old boards. Chase new wiring, run the AC pipe and point, frame the false ceiling. Order the wardrobe, bed and panel; factory pieces take 10–15 days.
Week 2Board and joint the ceiling, form the cove. Putty and prime all walls.
Week 3Paint, then limewash the bed wall. Polish the marble. Fit the wardrobe, fluted panel and ledges.
Week 4Lights, switches, AC and fan. Laminate the doors, hang the curtains, bring in the bed and style the room.
